Sultans Trail - a European Cultural Route Verified partner
Starting in culturally rich Vienna, the trail heads east through Lower Austria to fascinating Royal Bratislava. Between Bratislava and Budapest, the trail passes through the flatland of the Little Hungarian plain. Hikers will get a taste of life along the flood-prone Danube river.
Where the Danube finds a breach in the Carpathian mountains, the Episcopal city Esztergom sits proudly on top of a mount, overlooking the plain below. Hikers proceed through the Pilis hills towards Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
From Budapest, the trail continues south through the Hungarian countryside of Transdanubia, visiting coronation city Székesfehérvár, former Roman Gorsium; trading post on the famous Amber route, and the historic Mohács battlegrounds, where the faith of the Hungarian kingdom was sealed by Ottoman sultan Suleyman. After passing through the hills of the Fruska Gora and visiting the vibrant city of Novi Sad, the trail enters Belgrade, strategically located at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers, the Grand prize for every empire trying to gain control over the area and completely destroyed in these contests, 36 times. Nowadays the fascinating capital of Serbia is famous for its great nightlife.
From Belgrade route continues along the ancient route to Sofia and Istanbul south through Serbia, where hikers will pass through the charming medieval city of Nis and the picturesque countryside of central Serbia and have entered the Balkan region and find a rich Byzantine culture, with beautiful churches, frescos, and Cyrillic script but above all notorious hospitality. As the trail enters Bulgaria, through the rugged borderland, the hikers will be treated to a breath-taking view of the Nisava river and the lovely Sofia plain, and finally at the millennia-old city of Sofia, a cultural kaleidoscope of old and new. Hikers pass through the historic city of Plovdiv and the picturesque mountain villages of the Rhodope Mountains. Across the Turkish border, a hidden gem is revealed, the stunning but little-known former Ottoman capital of Edirne, the absolute pinnacle of Ottoman architecture, in quality surpassing Istanbul.
The Sultanstrail is a challenging route that requires a good level of fitness, as well as a sense of adventure. The route is mostly unpaved and includes some climbs and descents, as well as long stretches of gravel roads. However, the rewards for tackling this route are many, as hikers will have the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in the region, as well as the rich cultural heritage of the countries through which the route passes.
