Leaving Paljane, the trail enters the hills of central Serbia toward the historic Ravanica Monastery and the village of Senje before arriving at Ćuprija, in the Morava Valley.

Founded in the 1370s by Prince Lazar, Ravanica Monastery is one of the most important monuments of medieval Serbia and a masterpiece of the Morava architectural school. The monastery became the burial place of Prince Lazar after his death at the Battle of Kosovo and served as an important spiritual and cultural centre throughout the Ottoman period.

Near Senje lies one of Serbia’s oldest coal-mining regions. The Senje Coal Mine, opened in the nineteenth century, played a significant role in the industrialisation of modern Serbia and still preserves historic mining buildings.

Descending into the broad Velika Morava valley, the trail rejoins the historic route of the Via Militaris, followed for centuries by Roman legions, Byzantine armies, Ottoman caravans, and modern travellers moving between Central Europe and Constantinople.

The stage ends in Ćuprija, a town whose name derives from the Turkish word köprü (“bridge”), reflecting its historic role as a crossing point over the Velika Morava River.

    Roadbook

From Paljane, the trail keeps to low wooded slopes on the southern edge of the Kučaj hills, where the land begins to fold gently toward the Morava basin. Old lanes slip between orchards and patches of oak scrub until the valley tightens and the walls and towers of Ravanica Monastery appear at the foot of the hills, tucked into a narrow, sheltered hollow above Senje. After the monastery, the route follows the stream down‑valley, the slopes slowly falling away as the countryside opens into the Velika Morava plain. Farm tracks and minor roads lead across flat, cultivated land toward Ćuprija, where river, railway, and highway meet at the edge of town to close the stage.

Ćuprija's history reaches back to Roman times, when it was founded as Horreum Margi—Horreum meaning granary and Margi referring to the Morava, which the Romans called Margus. Standing on the great road between Constantinople and Rome, the fort served as a military base with a shield‑making workshop and achieved the status of municipium before AD 224. In 505, Roman forces here were defeated by the Goths and Huns under the command of Mundo, a descendant of Attila. Under Slavic rule, the settlement became known as Ravno, “flat,” reflecting its position in the level river plain. Several local names—including Paljane, Isakovo, and the river Mirosava—recall the major clash of autumn 1191 between the Serbs under Stefan Nemanja and the Byzantines under Isaac II Angelos. In the 15th century, Ćuprija entered the Ottoman Empire, and after its conquest, the Turks built a bridge—köprü—from which the town ultimately took its name, anchoring this long‑settled crossroads on the Morava.

    Public transport

Paljane is a small village without its own transport hub, so hikers usually reach it via Ćuprija, the nearest town along the Belgrade–Niš rail corridor. Many travellers arrange a short taxi transfer from Ćuprija Centre directly to Paljane to begin the stage.

Ćuprija is well connected, with frequent regional buses and trains linking the town to Belgrade and Niš along Serbia’s main north–south corridor. For tight connections or late arrivals, taxis from the town centre provide the most reliable transport.

    Equipment

This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.
