The descent from Kahlenberg into Vienna begins with sweeping views over the city and the Danube, then drops through the vineyard‑lined slopes above Nussdorf and Heiligenstadt, districts long associated with winegrowers, composers, and the cultural life of old Döbling. As the route continues through Döbling and toward Türkenschanzpark, the landscape shifts from rural terraces to elegant residential streets and leafy 19th‑century parks shaped by Vienna’s expansion during the Habsburg era. Passing Weinhaus and entering Alservorstadt, the trail moves deeper into the historic urban fabric, where university buildings, old hospitals, and baroque churches reflect centuries of intellectual and civic life. Approaching Schottentor and the atmospheric Mölker Bastei, remnants of Vienna’s former fortifications appear, guiding the walker through narrow lanes once frequented by Beethoven and other artists. The final stretch leads past Rathauspark and through the lively streets of Neubau, where cafés, museums, and creative spaces signal the vibrant heart of modern Vienna. The stage culminates at Stephansdom, rising from the city centre as a Gothic landmark that gathers all these layers—vineyards, imperial grandeur, artistic heritage, and urban energy—into a single, iconic endpoint.

Roadbook
This stage forms the prologue to the Sultans Trail. It begins on the Kahlenberg in the Vienna Woods, where the Danube enters the Vienna Basin. From this height, the city lies below on land shaped by the Danube and the Wien River. The basin stood at the intersection of the north–south Amber Road and the east–west Roman Limes road. Slavic, German, and Hungarian settlements developed here over time.On the Kahlenberg, the Sobieski plaque at the St. Josefskirche marks the spot where the Polish king’s army descended on the besieged city in 1683. The nearby Stefaniewarte tower overlooks the basin and the roads leading toward the city. The trail descends through vineyards to Nussdorf, once an independent wine village. The Danube locks and weir regulate the river and protect Vienna from flooding, allowing construction in former floodplain districts such as Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt.Further on, the road passes places like Währing, which were once separate villages. In the inner city, the Roman Museum, churches, and public buildings stand along streets that formed part of the long-distance road network, connecting Vienna with the routes continuing east toward Hungary and beyond.
