This route is a stage of Section ST5 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

The route passes the Samara Peak before arriving at Velingrad.

Leaving Yundola, the trail traverses the western Rhodope Mountains through forests, high meadows, and rolling mountain terrain. The route passes Samara Peak, from where views extend across the surrounding ridges and valleys of the Rhodopes.

The Rhodope Mountains have long remained one of the most isolated regions of the Balkans, preserving distinct local traditions, mountain villages, and mixed religious communities through the Ottoman period and beyond.

Descending from the uplands, the trail reaches Velingrad, one of Bulgaria’s best-known spa towns. The settlement developed around its numerous mineral springs and lies within a broad forested basin surrounded by the Rhodope Mountains.

    Author’s recommendation

Velingrad houses numerous spas of all sorts: mud baths, radon baths, swimming pools, both public and attached to hotels, indoor and outdoor, with associated services such as massage, wellness treatments, salt rooms,  steam rooms, etc.

The Central Mineral Beach is a full-size public swimming pool at the heart of Ladzhene, fed by warm natural springs.

The Six historic  public baths are:

    • Radon’s Bath — a classic Chepino landmark where hot, radon‑rich mineral water fills a beautifully restored historic bathhouse.
    • Sulfur Bath (Siarna Bania) - an old Kamenitsa favourite, known for its strong sulfur springs and simple, authentic bathing tradition.
    • Mud Bath (Kalna Bania) — Velingrad’s traditional therapeutic mud bath, offering mineral‑rich treatments in a modest historic setting.
    • Women’s Bath – Ladzhene — a long‑standing women‑only mineral bath, now housed inside Hotel Rome, preserving the Ladzhene bathing tradition.
    • Velyova Bath — one of Velingrad’s most atmospheric old baths, with a stone‑built interior and naturally hot mineral water.
    • Flint Bath (Kremachna Bania) — a small, historic centre‑town bath named for its mineral‑rich “flint” waters, cherished by locals for generations.

    Roadbook

From the Yundola Plateau, the trail enters the deep, cool forests north of the Bistritsa River and begins a gentle, steady descent toward the spa town of Velingrad. This woodland—known locally as the Kozichka Gora Forest, part of the broader Veleka Mountain forest area—is rich in natural beauty, folklore, and striking rock formations. The route skirts two of its most characteristic landmarks: the prominent monolith of Kerachin Kamŭk and the rugged outcrops of Macheski Skali, both long associated with local legends and prehistoric ritual sites. Emerging from the trees, the trail opens into the wide basin of Velingrad, where mineral springs, warm air, and the first rooftops of the town signal the transition from mountain quiet to one of Bulgaria’s most celebrated spa centres.

    Equipment

This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.
