Sultans Trail Section 2 Bratislava - Budapest (in 11 stages)

Between Bratislava and Budapest, the Sultans Trail remains close to the Danube, following the river as it forms the border between Slovakia and Hungary across the wide Little Pannonian Plain. Entering the Plain, the current slows and begins to spread, creating the intricate 30km wide inner delta of Szigetköz in Hungary and Žitný Ostrov in Slovakia.

Here, the Danube once wandered freely, shifting its course across the flat land, flooding in spring and retreating in summer, leaving behind fertile soils, marshes, side arms, and narrow creeks. Life adjusted to these rhythms. Fishing, grazing, and modest farming on islands and higher banks shaped a landscape where water was accommodated rather than resisted.

Along this stretch, low traces of Roman fortifications still recall the time when the Danube marked the northern frontier of an empire. Centuries later, the same river line guided the Ottoman advance toward Vienna, reusing established crossings and supply routes. The Danube has long defined boundaries, yet it has also served as a corridor of movement linking the settlements along its banks.

At the beginning of this section, the trail offers two alternatives, each reflecting a different response to the river’s power. On the Slovak side, dams and hydraulic works now regulate the Danube, forming a long reservoir. On the Hungarian bank, much of the former wetland landscape survives, allowing the river to retain something of its older character.

Whichever side is chosen, the journey continues downstream through this broad, water-shaped plain, following the Danube on its gradual approach toward Budapest.
