The route from Bačka Palanka to Neštin, passing through the historic Croatian town of Ilok, offers one of the most scenic and culturally layered transitions along the Sultans Trail. Leaving Bačka Palanka, the trail approaches the Danube and crosses into Croatia, where Ilok rises above the river on a long, vineyard‑covered ridge. This is a landscape shaped by winegrowing since Roman times, later fortified by medieval Hungarian kings and transformed again under the Ottomans, whose presence is still visible in Ilok’s preserved hammam and fortress walls. The walk through Ilok blends river panoramas, terraced vineyards, and centuries of shifting borders. From here, the trail descends back toward the Danube and re‑enters Serbia, following quiet rural roads into Neštin, a village known for its orchards, wine, and peaceful riverbank setting. This stage beautifully combines cross‑border history with the gentle rhythms of the Danube landscape, offering walkers a sense of movement through both time and terrain.

    Roadbook

From Bačka Palanka, we cross the Danube and the Croatian border to reach Ilok, a historic fortified town perched on the high bank of the river. Ilok is the easternmost town of Croatia and has long held a strategic position along the Danube frontier. Among its historical remains are traces from the Ottoman period, including a hammam and a türbe (mausoleum).

After visiting Ilok, the route descends from the cliff overlooking the Danube and re-enters Serbia, gradually entering the vineyards and foothills of Fruška Gora. These hills along the southern bank of the Danube are sometimes called the Frankish Hills, recalling the period when the Frankish Empire extended its influence to this region during the reign of Charlemagne.

Hidden among the folds of Fruška Gora are numerous historic Serbian monasteries, many of which survived the centuries of Ottoman rule and played an important role in preserving Serbian spiritual and cultural life.
