This route is a stage of Section ST4 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

The route passes through Ivanyane, Manilov Dol, Suhodol, the Smardana area, and Zapaden before arriving in Sofia.

Leaving Bankya, the trail descends gradually from the wooded western edge of the Sofia basin toward the Bulgarian capital. The route passes through Ivanyane, Manilov Dol, Suhodol, the Smardana area, and Zapaden, where villages and former rural settlements have gradually been absorbed into the expanding urban area.

Ahead lies Sofia, ancient Serdica, one of the principal crossroads of the Balkans. Roman emperors, Ottoman caravans, merchants, pilgrims, and modern travellers all passed through this basin, where routes from the Danube, the Adriatic, Constantinople, and the Aegean converged. The Via Militaris crossed the city on its way east toward Plovdiv and Istanbul.

The stage ends in Sofia, where Roman remains, Ottoman mosques and hammams, churches, synagogues, and nineteenth-century public buildings stand packed together in the historic centre.

    Author’s recommendation

Sofia, is Bulgaria’s capital, and one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, set in the broad Sofia Valley at the foot of Vitosha Mountain; its streets layer Roman Serdica, medieval Sredets, Ottoman‑era buildings, and modern boulevards, while landmarks such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the St. George Rotunda, and the city’s many mineral springs reflect a place shaped by empires, religions, and trade routes over more than 7,000 years.

    Roadbook

From Bankya, the trail threads its way toward Sofia through a landscape where villages and suburbs are steadily expanding into what was once open countryside. The route weaves between new housing clusters, smallholdings, and remnants of older field paths, seeking out whatever patches of green remain—orchards, meadows, and narrow belts of woodland that soften the approach to the capital. As the city’s edge draws nearer, these quiet fragments of rural space become increasingly precious, offering brief moments of calm before the trail finally merges with Sofia's wider urban fabric.

    Public transport

Bankya is a spa town on Sofia’s western fringe, connected to the capital by frequent suburban trains and regular buses. The stage ends close to the Bankya Railway Station, where trains run directly to Sofia’s central station. Buses from the town centre also link Bankya with neighbourhoods across the capital, stopping at the Bankya Bus Stop. Taxis are readily available for quick transfers to or from Sofia or to connect with long‑distance services.

Sofia. The stage ends on the western side of Sofia, within easy reach of the city’s extensive public transport network. Local buses and trams provide quick links to the centre, while the metro offers fast onward travel across the capital. From here, travellers can continue to the Sofia Central Bus Station or Sofia Central Railway Station for long‑distance connections. Taxis are widely available and provide the most direct transfer to accommodation or onward transport hubs.

Sofia Airport. You reach Sofia Airport (SOF) easily because both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are fully integrated into the city’s transport network.
