The route passes the National Palace of Culture (NDK), South Park, Dragalevtsi, and the Dragalevtsi Monastery before arriving at the Aleko hut on Vitosha Mountain.
The route continues through Dragalevtsi, once a separate village on the edge of the Sofia basin. Here stands the Dragalevtsi Monastery, founded in the fourteenth century during the final decades of the medieval Bulgarian state. Hidden in the lower slopes of Vitosha, the monastery survived the Ottoman period and remained an important religious and cultural centre.
Beyond Dragalevtsi, the trail climbs steadily through the forests of Vitosha Nature Park. As the ascent continues, wider views open across the Sofia basin and the surrounding mountains. The stage ends at Aleko Hut, high on the slopes of Vitosha beneath the mountain’s open alpine plateau.

Public transport
SofiaFly. The fastest and most common way to get to Sofia is to fly to Sofia Airport (SOF), then continue into the city by metro, bus, or taxi. If you’re travelling overland, Sofia is reachable by international buses and some rail routes, but 95% of travellers choose air travel.
Airlines flying to Sofia are: Wizz Air (many European cities), Ryanair, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Bulgaria Air
Bus. Sofia is a major Balkan bus hub. All long‑distance buses arrive at the Central Bus Station. Buses are often faster than trains in the Balkans.
Train to Sofia (limited but possible). International rail to Sofia exists but is slow and infrequent. Current workable routes:
- Belgrade → Sofia (seasonal / irregular; often replaced by bus)
- Istanbul → Sofia (night train, popular)
- Bucharest → Sofia (day train, slow but scenic)
The national Bulgarian train system works quite well internally.
Aleko
You can reach Aleko (the Vitosha mountain chalet & ski area) from central Sofia by bus, taxi, or gondola.
Directions
SofiaGetting from Sofia Airport to the city:
- Metro Line M4 (Terminal 2 → city centre), the most reliable and avoids traffic.
- Bus 84 / 184 (Terminals 1 & 2 → Orlov Most / city)
- Taxi (OK Supertrans only)
Aleko
Bus. The classic route is city bus 66, which climbs directly to Aleko, starting at the Hladilnika bus terminal (next to Vitosha Metro Station). Travel time: ~40 minutes. This line operates mainly on weekends & holidays (summer & winter seasons). On weekdays, service is limited or absent. If 66 isn’t running, combine Bus 64 or Bus 93 to Dragalevtsi, then walk to the Dragalevtsi chairlift, or take a taxi to Aleko.
Taxi. A taxi from central Sofia to Aleko is straightforward. Use OK Supertrans or Yellow Taxi. Travel time: 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. This is the most reliable option outside weekends or in winter.
Gondola. The Simeonovo Gondola is the classic lift to Aleko. It start at Simeonovo Gondola Base Station. Travel time: ~25 minutes. The gondola runs seasonally and often only on weekends. Check operating hours before you go — they vary by season and weather. The Gondola base station can be reached from the Vitosha Metro Station (M2) with Bus 122 or Bus 123, or from the city centre with Bus 111 or Bus 413 to Mladost 1, then transfer to Bus 122 or Bus 123.

Equipment
This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
