The Sultans Trail is an international long-distance hiking trail that follows historic routes from Vienna to Istanbul, linking Central Europe with south-eastern Europe and the Orient. The trail roughly traces the old land routes once used during the Ottoman period, many of which themselves followed earlier Roman itineraries.
Along the way, the Sultans Trail crosses a wide variety of landscapes, including river valleys, plains, hills, and mountain regions, and passes through towns and villages shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. The route highlights shared European history, with numerous cultural and historical sites along the way.
The trail is roughly 2500 km long, with about 1100 km of alternative routes and contains more than 120 daily stages ranging from 15-30 km. The trail is divided into sections, with a beginning and an ending in one of the major cities along the trail, providing access and entry points from abroad.
This collection brings together the official sections and stages of the Sultans Trail. Each stage is designed as a day hike, with clearly defined start and end points, and can be walked independently. Together, the stages form a continuous long-distance hiking experience across eight countries: Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
Hikers are advised to plan carefully, as infrastructure, accommodation, and terrain vary significantly between regions. The Sultans Trail is best suited to experienced walkers equipped for multi-day, self-supported hiking.
Walk the Sultans Trail stage by stage and follow a historic route that connects cultures, landscapes, and continents.
