The route from Neštin into the heart of Fruška Gora unfolds as a gradual ascent from the quiet Danube terraces into one of Serbia’s most storied and biodiverse mountain landscapes. Leaving the river behind, the trail passes through the villages of Lug, Sviloš, and Grabovo, each shaped by centuries of frontier life, shifting empires, and the resilient agricultural traditions of the Fruška Gora foothills. The scenery changes steadily: vineyards and orchards give way to rolling hills, oak and linden forests, and the first hints of the national park’s protected habitats. This region has long been known as the “Serbian Athos” for its concentration of medieval monasteries, and although not all lie directly on the route, their historical presence permeates the landscape. As the trail approaches Andrevlje, the forest deepens and the air grows cooler, offering walkers a sense of entering a quieter, older world where nature and history blend seamlessly. This stage marks the true gateway into Fruška Gora’s wooded interior, setting the tone for the mountain paths ahead.

    Roadbook

From Neštin, the trail gradually climbs onto the slopes of Fruška Gora. This mountain ridge once formed an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea and today rises prominently above the surrounding plains. The Romans knew it as Alma Mons, the “fertile mountain.”

Viticulture here dates back to Roman times. According to tradition, vineyards were first planted during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus (276–282), who was born in nearby Sirmium. The favourable slopes and climate have supported wine production ever since.

Fruška Gora is now a national park known for its forests, vineyards, and historic monasteries. During the 16th century, many medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries hidden in these hills became centres of spiritual and political life for the Serbian population under Ottoman rule.

Our route leads first through open fields and past the quiet villages of Lug, Sviloš, and Grabovo before entering the wooded hills of the mountain.
