Tsari Mali Grad Fortress is a restored late Roman and medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the village of Belchin in western Bulgaria. The site combines reconstructed fortifications, archaeological exhibitions, and the restored 15th-century Church of the Ascension. Today, it is one of Bulgaria’s most accessible and visually impressive archaeological heritage complexes.
The origins of Tsari Mali Grad date back to the late Roman period, when a fortified settlement was established on the strategic hill above modern Belchin to control routes through the surrounding valleys. Archaeological excavations uncovered remains of defensive walls, towers, gates, churches, and everyday objects, revealing that the site continued to be used during the Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian periods. Extensive restoration and conservation projects in recent years transformed the fortress into an open-air archaeological complex where visitors can explore reconstructed sections of walls, towers, and the main entrance gate.

One of the highlights of the site is the restored 15th-century Church of the Ascension, which stands within the fortress complex and reflects the continuity of Christian worship in the region after the medieval period. Several exhibitions present archaeological discoveries from the excavations, including Roman military armour, catapults, ceramics, coins, horseshoes, bells, and other reconstructed artefacts illustrating daily life and military activity. The fortress also offers panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, combining historical interpretation with the natural landscape of western Bulgaria.
