The route passes Vladichina polyana and Bear Pass before arriving at the Makadoniya hut.
The route passes Vladichina Polyana, a mountain meadow surrounded by dense conifer forest, before continuing upward toward Bear Pass. Higher up, the landscape opens into alpine terrain with broad views across the ridges and valleys of the Rila massif.
These mountains have long formed both a refuge and a barrier within the Balkans. Monasteries, seasonal pastures, and remote settlements survived here far from the main military and commercial roads of the plains below.
Makedoniya Hut takes its name from the historical region of Macedonia. After the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878, the lands farther south in Macedonia remained within the Ottoman Empire for several more decades, leaving the new Bulgarian frontier not far from these mountains.
The stage ends at Makedoniya Hut, situated high in the mountains beneath the exposed ridges leading toward the southwestern ranges of Bulgaria.

Tips and suggestions
You may be able to find accommodation in the Iliina River valley at Villa M. Vladichina polyana. The Makedonya hut is located on the southern slope of the mountain, across the saddle pass. It is a solid two‑storey hut with 40 places in 4‑ and 6‑bed rooms plus communal sleeping; no private rooms; offering blankets, sheets, water, indoor toilets and a bathroom, and a kitchen. The hut is operated by volunteers. It is possible to arrange for dinner ahead of time.
Roadbook
After the last meadow, the route doubles back sharply and begins a sustained ascent through conifer forest toward the high saddle between Golyam Mechi Vrah (Large Bear Peak) and Malak Mechi Vrah (Small Bear Peak). This climb marks the transition from the enclosed river valleys to the open ridges of the central Rila. Once on the saddle, the terrain levels out and the trail continues across high, windswept ground toward the welcoming lights of the Makedoniya Hut, perched on a shoulder of the mountain with wide views over the surrounding peaks.
