This route is a stage of Section ST4 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

The route passes Lukovica, Sedlare, Subotica, Plazjane, and Miliva before arriving at Despotovac.

Leaving Svilajnac, the trail heads south-east through the Resava valley, following local roads across fertile farmland and low rolling hills. The route passes through the villages of Lukovica, Sedlare, Subotica, Plažane, and Miliva, where agriculture still shapes daily life and the rhythm of the landscape.

As the trail gradually approaches the foothills of eastern Serbia, the broad plains begin to give way to more varied terrain. This region lay along the inland route connecting the Morava basin with the mining districts and monasteries of medieval Serbia.

The stage concludes in Despotovac, a town named after Despot Stefan Lazarević, the medieval Serbian ruler who strengthened and rebuilt the Serbian state in the early fifteenth century.

    Author’s recommendation

Have a rest stop at the watermill on the Resava River, just past Subotica.

The major attraction in Despotovac is Manasija Monastery, the fortified 15th‑century foundation of Despot Stefan Lazarević, known for its defensive towers and remarkable frescoes.

    Roadbook

From Svilajnac, the trail turns southeast and follows the gentle valley of the Resava River upstream, steadily toward the foothills of the Kučaj mountains. The route traces quiet roads and riverside paths through a landscape shaped by water, farmland, and low wooded slopes, with the river guiding the way deeper into the interior of Serbia. As the valley narrows and the hills rise around it, the trail approaches Despotovac, a small town known as the gateway to the medieval Manasija Monastery and the dramatic gorges of eastern Serbia, marking the end of a calm and scenic riverside stage.

    Public transport

Svilajnac is most easily reached from Belgrade by frequent regional buses departing from Belgrade Main Bus Station for the Resava valley, operated mainly by Lasta and Arriva Serbia. The journey takes around ninety minutes and ends at the compact Svilajnac Bus Station, a short walk from the town centre and the start of the stage. Travellers approaching from Niš or Jagodina can also reach Svilajnac by direct regional buses, making it a straightforward access point from across central Serbia.

Despotovac is served by regular regional buses linking the town with Jagodina, where onward trains and intercity buses connect to Belgrade and Niš.

Services also run directly from Despotovac Bus Station to Ćuprija, offering additional rail links along the main north–south corridor.

Departures thin out in the evening, so hikers often time their arrival to match the mid‑afternoon buses, though taxis are available in the centre for quick transfers to nearby railway stations.

    Equipment

This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.
