Section ST3 of the Sultans Trail runs from Budapest to Belgrade. The trail passes through Százhalombatta, Székesfehérvár, Dunföldvár, Kalocsa, and Mohács in Hungary, and Sombor, Backa Palanka, Ilok, Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci, and Zemun in Serbia, before arriving in Belgrade.
Part 1 of Section ST3 in Hungary takes us to Székesfehérvár, the coronation city of Hungarian kings before the Ottoman conquest. The trail meanders through the Transdanubian landscape, nestled in the low foothills of the Alps. We again encounter the Danube at Dunaföldvár, travelling along the Pest side of the river for a while before crossing back to explore the expansive Gemenc Nature Park. The Danube traces the edge of the Pannonian Plain, with the right bank generally at a higher elevation than the left. Near the Serbian border, we pass Mohács, where Suleyman the Magnificent delivered a devastating defeat to the Hungarian Kingdom.
Part 2 of Section ST3 in Serbia passes through the flatlands of the autonomous Serbian province of Vojvodina and the gentle hills of Fruška Gora before arriving in Novi Sad. The Vojvodina region in northern Serbia was a part of Hungary until it was ceded to Yugoslavia at the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. From Novi Sad, we continue along the Danube to Belgrade.
Part 3 of Section ST3 in Croatia offers an alternative route from Mohács through Slavonia, via Osijek to Ilok, where it connects to the Serbian route of part 2.
