The route from Vukovar to Ilok follows the gentle rise of the Srijem hills toward the easternmost tip of Croatia, moving through a landscape where the Danube’s broad floodplain gradually gives way to rolling vineyards and historic villages. Leaving Vukovar, the trail passes through Sotin, a settlement marked by both ancient archaeological finds and the more recent memories of the 1990s, before continuing toward Opatovac, where fields, orchards, and quiet farm roads reflect the region's deep agricultural traditions. The approach to Lovas brings a shift into more undulating terrain, with the first views of the wine‑growing slopes that define this part of Srijem. From Bapska, the trail climbs gently toward the ridge leading to Ilok, Croatia’s oldest continuously inhabited town, long shaped by the Romans, medieval Hungarian kings, and the Ottomans. The final descent into Ilok reveals a landscape of terraced vineyards and sweeping Danube panoramas, culminating at the fortified hilltop where the noble Odescalchi palace and ancient wine cellars stand above the river. This stage blends quiet rural scenery, layered history, and the gradual emergence of Ilok’s dramatic, vineyard‑crowned silhouette.

    Roadbook

Leaving Vukovar, the trail follows the Danube eastward through the fertile countryside of eastern Slavonia. The route passes through the villages of Sotin and Opatovac, small settlements that lie close to the river and the surrounding agricultural land.

Continuing along quiet country roads and field tracks, the trail reaches Lovas and then Bapska, both situated on the gentle slopes rising from the Danube plain. Vineyards and orchards become increasingly common as the route approaches the hills near the Croatian–Serbian border.

The stage concludes in Ilok, a historic fortified town overlooking the Danube. Perched on a high riverbank, Ilok commands sweeping views of the surrounding plains and marks the easternmost town of Croatia. Its medieval fortress, old town centre, and long tradition of wine production make it one of the most distinctive settlements along this section of the trail.

This section of the trail is still under development. Walkers who explore this route are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions. If you would like to contribute feedback, you may consider becoming a trail inspector and contact the trail team via trailcoordinator@sultanstrail.com
