This route is a stage of Section ST1 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

The trail passes Simmering, Kaiserebersdorf, and Schwechat before arriving at Rauchenwarth.

Leaving Stephansdom, the trail moves through Vienna’s historic centre before gradually shifting into the working‑class and industrial landscapes of Simmering, a district shaped by brickworks, factories, and the long history of Vienna’s eastern expansion. Continuing toward Kaiserebersdorf, the city thins into a patchwork of old village streets, baroque estates, and open fields that once marked the edge of the Habsburg capital. The route then skirts Schwechat, where the Danube plain opens wide, and the presence of the airport, oil refinery, and transport corridors reflects the modern infrastructure that grew around this strategic crossing of rivers and trade routes. Beyond Schwechat, the landscape becomes increasingly rural, with broad agricultural fields, drainage canals, and the big skies of the Vienna Basin guiding the walker southward. Approaching Rauchenwarth, the scenery settles into a quiet, low‑lying countryside shaped by centuries of farming and the winds that sweep across the Marchfeld. This stage offers a striking transition—from imperial city streets to industrial edges and finally to the open, windswept plains that lead away from Vienna.

    Author’s recommendation

Worth a visit at the Karlsplatz are the Albertina Museum, the Wien Museum, and the Karlskirche; next are the Museum and gardens of Schloss Belvedèdre, followed by the Museum of Military History. In Simmering, you may want to see the Mosaic of the Sultan's tent in the Mautner-Markhof-Gasse, Schloss Neugebeude and the central Friedhof.  Schwechat is the birthplace of the Dreher brewery, which still brews beer at the Schwechat brewery.

    Roadbook

Leaving Stephansdom, the trail follows streets that replaced Vienna’s former city walls and lead toward the open ground beyond. The Karlskirche and the Wien Museum stand near this former line of fortification. Further on, the Belvedere Palace rises above its formal gardens. Built outside the old city, it later became part of Vienna as the surrounding suburbs were incorporated.Beyond the Belvedere, the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum preserves objects from the wars that shaped the city, including the Ottoman siege of 1683. In Simmering, a ceramic mural on Simmeringer Hauptstraße depicts Kara Mustafa before Vienna, recalling the Ottoman army that advanced along the same approach from the Hungarian plain. The trail continues to Schloss Neugebäude, a large Renaissance palace built on open ground near the Danube, where Sultan Suleyman pitched his tent during the first siege of Vienna. Nearby lies the Zentralfriedhof, one of Europe’s largest cemeteries. From here, the road leads past Schwechat and crosses the outer ring of motorways. The dense city gives way to fields, and the trail enters the open landscape of Lower Austria on its way to Rauchenwarth.
