The Votive Church in Vienna is a neo‑Gothic basilica built as a thanksgiving votive offering after the failed assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I; it was consecrated in 1879 and is Vienna’s second‑tallest church at 99 m.
Commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as a sign of gratitude for his brother’s survival in 1853 and funded by over 300,000 donations, the Votive Church stands on Rooseveltplatz with twin spires that cut a dramatic silhouette on the Ringstraße. Designed by Heinrich von Ferstel in the 19th‑century neo‑Gothic style, its interior features soaring vaulted ceilings, magnificent stained glass and the Renaissance sarcophagus of Count Niklas Salm, defender of Vienna in 1529. The church also hosts a museum of sacred art and occasional immersive light shows, blending historic reverence with cultural experiences.

Public transport

Take the U2 (U‑Bahn) to Schottentor (about a 4‑minute walk) or trams 1, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42 to the same stop; several buses also serve Schottentor. It’s also walkable from the University of Vienna or nearby Ringstraße sights.

Use the Wien Mobil app or the Moovit app to plan your journey.

Parking

Street parking around Rooseveltplatz is in Vienna’s paid short‑term zone (meter or app required), and spaces can be limited. Choosing a nearby underground garage (e.g., around the University or Rathaus area) and then walking or using public transport is often easier than searching for curbside spots.
