The Schottenstift and Schottenkirche in Vienna were founded in 1155 by Irish‑Scottish monks under Duke Henry II Jasomirgott; the church blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture and preserves Vienna’s oldest Marian statue.
Founded to bring religious, educational, and administrative expertise to the Viennese court, the Schottenstift was staffed by Irish‑Scottish monks and quickly became a centre of learning, hosting a writing school and later connections to the University of Vienna. The Schottenkirche, consecrated in 1200, was originally a Romanesque three‑aisled church; Gothic and Baroque renovations followed after fires, sieges, and earthquakes. Highlights include the Romanesque chapel, the 1250 statue of Our Lady of the Scots, and the Starhemberg epitaph for the defender of Vienna during the second Turkish siege. Over centuries, the monastery expanded its estates, survived Reformation and Turkish sieges, and remained influential in Vienna’s cultural and spiritual life. The surrounding Schottenhöfe were rebuilt in the 19th century, replacing medieval cloisters, and the abbey still retains agricultural holdings from its early history. The site blends centuries of architecture, history, art, and civic memory into a single landmark of Austrian heritage.
