The Niklas Graf Salm Denkmal is a statue on Rathausplatz honouring Count Niklas of Salm, who led Vienna’s defence during the First Turkish Siege of 1529.
Erected in 1867 by sculptor Matthias Purkarthofer, the monument shows Niklas Graf Salm in armour with a helmet at his feet, symbolising his role as a steadfast military commander. Originally placed on the Elisabethbrücke, it was moved to Rathauspark / Rathausplatz in 1902 alongside other historic statues after the bridge’s demolition.
Count Salm (1459–1530) was an imperial commander who successfully organised the defence of Vienna against the Ottoman forces in 1529, helping protect the city despite being wounded; he later died from his injuries. The statue celebrates his military leadership and Vienna’s resilience, and today it stands among other historic memorials walking distance from the City Hall.
