The Schottenkirche in Vienna, founded in 1155 and consecrated in 1200, is a Romanesque‑Gothic church famed for its 1250 statue of Our Lady of the Scots and its Baroque rebuilds after fires and sieges.
The Schottenkirche, founded in 1155 and consecrated in 1200, reflects Vienna’s layered architectural history with Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements. The original three‑nave Romanesque church survives in the sacristy and Romanesque chapel, which houses the 1250 statue of Our Lady of the Scots, Vienna’s oldest depiction of Mary, credited with miraculous interventions during Swedish and Turkish threats. After fires, earthquakes, and lightning‑damaged towers, the church was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th century, including richly decorated towers and a slightly shortened nave. The crypt contains the Starhemberg epitaph, honouring Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg, defender of Vienna during the second Turkish siege. The church has remained a centre of faith and culture for centuries, blending sacred art, historical events, and civic memory in its halls and chapels.
