The Türkischer Reiter is a gilded rider statue in Vienna’s 7th district, recalling Ottoman imagery linked to the 1683 siege of Vienna and a long-standing local legend.

The gilded statue of a Turkish horseman, wearing a turban, harem trousers and wielding a scimitar, marks the corner of Neustiftgasse and Kellermanngasse. It originally adorned the so-called Türkenhaus, built in 1790, which stood on this site until its demolition around 1900. The figure commemorated the belief that Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha had pitched his command tent here during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683. Modern historical research, however, shows that the Ottoman tent city was actually located on the Schmelz (today’s 15th district), not in Neubau. The original statue was donated to the Vienna Museum, and a replica was reinstalled on the rebuilt corner building after its renovation in 2021, preserving the site as a reminder of how legend, memory and history intertwine in Vienna’s urban landscape.
