Bezirksmuseum Alsergrund presents the history of Vienna’s 9th district with exhibits on local life, work, crafts and culture, alongside memorial rooms for writers Heimito von Doderer and Erich Fried.

Housed in a historic building on Währinger Straße, the museum’s permanent displays explore the everyday world of Alsergrund — from housing and family life to shop wares, vanished crafts and industry — with original objects, plans and models. There are dedicated Gedenkräume (memorial rooms) for the authors Heimito von Doderer, showing manuscripts and personal items, and for Erich Fried, with furnishings from his London exile. The museum also features a library and archive, and the fun Sparefroh‑Haus collection of World Savings.

Parking

Street parking near the museum is possible but can be limited; much of the area is in Vienna’s paid short‑term parking zone, so you’ll need to pay at meters or use an app. A nearby private garage or parking zone just outside the city centre combined with a short tram ride can make visiting easier.
