The Beethoven Museum in Heiligenstadt is set in the house where he lived in 1802 and wrote the “Heiligenstädter Testament”. It showcases his life, works and legacy.
Housed in a former country bakery with a small courtyard and simple interiors, the museum’s exhibition spaces convey a sense of authenticity while guiding you through Beethoven’s life and creative journey. It focuses especially on his time in Vienna (1792–1827) and his summer in Heiligenstadt, where he sought relief from his progressive deafness and composed or sketched ideas for major works such as early material for the Eroica and other key compositions. Displays include early hearing devices like ear tubes, a resonance box that amplified his piano, interactive music stations, and a narrative of his social and artistic world. The atmosphere is contemplative, inviting visitors to connect with both Beethoven’s genius and his personal struggles.

Public transport
Public transport in Vienna makes getting to the museum easy. Take the U4 underground line to Heiligenstadt and then either walk (about 10 minutes) or catch a local bus such as the 38A towards Armbrustergasse — the stop is close to Probusgasse where the museum sits at Probusgasse 6 in the 19th district. A single, integrated ticket covers buses and the U‑Bahn.Parking
If you’re driving, street parking is limited since Heiligenstadt is a residential area. Many visitors choose to park at a Park & Ride (P+R) facility near the Heiligenstadt U‑Bahn station and continue by public transport into the district — this helps avoid narrow local streets and scarce spaces in the heart of Heiligenstadt.Coordinates
