Graf Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg Denkmal, Vienna
The Starhemberg Monument honours Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg, Vienna’s commander during the 1683 Ottoman siege, celebrated for defending the city until relief forces arrived.
Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg was the military commander of Vienna during the Battle of Vienna in 1683. Born in Graz, Styria, von Starhemberg fought in the 1660s against French and Ottoman forces. In 1683, he was military commander of Vienna, with fewer than 20,000 men to oppose about 120,000 besieging Ottomans. On July 15, 1683, he refused an offer by the Turkish commander Kara Mustafa Pasha to capitulate, counting on the speedy arrival of the Imperial army of the Habsburg emperor Leopold I and the strength of city walls, which had been fortified after the first Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1529. When, after two months of siege, the relief army under the command of Polish king Jan Sobieski arrived, Vienna was on the brink of collapse. Its walls were breached by Turkish sappers who had made tunnels under the walls, packed them with gunpowder, and detonated the explosive charges. Finally, on September 12, 80,000 Polish, Venetian, Bavarian, and Saxon troops attacked the Turks and defeated them in the Battle of the Kahlenberg. Going after the retreating Ottoman troops, Starhemberg was severely wounded by a shot in his left hand during the Siege of Buda in 1686 and had to abandon his command. In 1691, he was made President of the Hofkriegsrat and responsible for the Habsburg army's organisation. He was buried in the Schottenkirche. Source: wikipedia
