A monument that honors Ukrainian Cossacks in 1683 and symbolizes modern Ukraine’s European identity.
The Cossack Monument – a pipe-smoking Cossack sitting on a stone and his grazing horse – was unveiled on 15 September 2003 in Vienna’s Türkenschanzpark to mark the 320th anniversary of the Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna. It commemorates the role of the Ukrainian Cossack army in the relief battle of 12 September 1683. At the same time, it also serves as a symbol of identification for the young Ukrainian nation and as a sign of its orientation toward Europe.
