The Äußeres Burgtor is a monumental Neoclassical city gate built in 1821 to commemorate Napoleon’s defeat, standing on a key former defensive point of Vienna’s fortifications.
The Äußeres Burgtor stands on the site of the old castle gate, originally constructed in 1660 to defend Vienna against Ottoman attacks. During the Second Turkish Siege of 1683, the nearby Castle Bastion and Löwel Bastion were among the fiercest battlegrounds along the city walls. The earlier gate was destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1809, and the present structure was erected in 1821 as a memorial to Napoleon’s decisive defeat at the Battle of Leipzig (1813). Designed in a restrained Neoclassical style, the gate symbolises imperial power and military victory; the four golden laurel branches above the central arch represent fame, rank, and sovereignty. Today, the gate also houses memorial spaces and forms a ceremonial entrance between the Heldenplatz and the Ringstrasse.
