Sultans Trail - a European Cultural Route

Built in 1874–79 with one of the world’s largest refracting telescopes of its time. Today has a small museum of astronomical instruments, rare books and artefacts.

The Vienna University Observatory on Türkenschanzstraße was established in the late 19th century to replace earlier facilities dating back to the mid‑18th century, and at its opening featured a 68 cm refracting telescope that was among the largest in the world. Its historic building now includes a small museum in the former director’s flat showcasing astronomical instruments, telescopes, globes, clocks and a rare library of science books from the 15th to the 18th century — one of the most significant historical astronomy collections in Central Europe.

Public transport

Get there by tram 40, 41 (Aumannplatz) or Take tram 37 to Türkenschanzstraße/Universitätssternwarte, or bus 35A to the same stop. From Spittelau U‑Bahn (U6), it’s about a 10‑minute walk along Türkenschanzstraße. Use the Wien Mobil app or the Moovit app to plan your journey.

Parking

Street parking is available along Türkenschanzstraße, but spaces can be limited. The nearest Park & Ride is Heiligenstadt P+R, from which you can either walk (~15 min) or take the tram/bus to the observatory.
