The Haus der Geschichte Österreich (hdgö) is Austria’s national contemporary history museum, opened in 2018 to mark 100 years since the founding of the First Republic.

Housed in the Neue Hofburg on Heldenplatz, the Haus der Geschichte Österreich opened on 12 November 2018, exactly a century after the proclamation of the First Austrian Republic in 1918. The museum traces Austria’s turbulent modern history from the late Habsburg Monarchy through the First Republic, the Anschluss and Nazi period, and the founding and development of the Second Republic up to the present day. Through original objects, multimedia installations and personal stories, the exhibitions invite visitors to critically reflect on democracy, identity, responsibility and Austria’s place in Europe.

Tickets can be obtained at the museum box office and online in our Webshop be purchased. Entry to the House of Austrian History includes a visit Ephesus Museum.

Public transport

Take U3 to Herrengasse or Volkstheater, or U2 to MuseumsQuartier. Trams 1, 2, D, 71 stop along the Ringstrasse nearby.

Parking

Parking around Heldenplatz is paid and limited. Nearby underground car parks (MuseumsQuartier or Ringstrasse garages) are the easiest option.
