Das heutige Bauwerk ist 107 m lang und 34 m breit. Die alte Westfassade wird von den beiden etwa 65 m hohen "Heidentürmen" begrenzt. Der höchste Turm ist der Südturm mit rund 135 m und 13 Glocken. Im ehemaligen Kaiserreich durfte kein sakraler Bau höher sein, als dieser Südturm. Der Nordturm des Stephansdoms hingegen wurde nie vollendet und misst bis heute nur knapp 70 m. Und doch beherbergt er eines der geschichtsträchtigsten Stücke der Kathedrale: die "Pummerin", eine aus den Kanonenkugeln, die in den Türkenkriegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts die Kirche beschädigten, gegossene Glocke.
