The landmark of Füssen in the Allgäu is Neuschwanstein Castle. Sheltered by mighty Alpine peaks, with a wide view over the lake landscape that lies at its feet like a large castle park. Nowhere along the Alpine chain is the romance of nature more palpable than around Bavaria's sightseeing icon and the neighboring holiday resort of Füssen. It's no coincidence that some of the most popular long-distance hiking and cycling routes meet here at the junction of high mountains and the foothills: E4, Via Alpina (Violet Route), Maximilian's Way, King Ludwig's Way, Lechweg, Allgäu Hiking Trilogy, King's Alpine Route, Romantic Road Cycle Route, Lake Constance-Königssee Cycle Path, Via Claudia Augusta, Allgäu Cycle Tour.
King Ludwig II. already liked to wander through the landscape around Füssen as a child. Later, he not only built his own castle here but also spent time on the huts in the Bleckenau, on the Tegelberg, or in the Kenzen area. The royal routes are still great hiking tips – from rather flat lake circuits to the challenging Säuling summit tour. The cycling holiday region also offers plenty of variety for cyclists. Leisure cyclists and families are well accommodated on the routes at the foot of the mountains, and between the numerous lakes, the next bathing bay is never far away. Leisure mountain bikers especially appreciate the dense network of huts in the region. Road cyclists can collect kilometers on low-traffic routes in the foothills or test their endurance on the Alpine passes.
The winter in Füssen is rather gentle - instead of ski slope hustle, there are more winter variants for connoisseurs. Especially winter hikers will find many destinations around Füssen.
The romantic old town of Füssen with its many street cafés evokes Italy and invites you to stroll. A sightseeing tip: the Museum of the City of Füssen with magnificent Baroque rooms and one of Europe's most beautiful collections of historic lutes and violins. Around Füssen, many lakes invite you to swim and water sports, such as Hopfensee, Forggensee, Weißensee, and Alatsee. On the Forggensee, the view can also be enjoyed from the two passenger ships of the Forggensee Shipping. The shipping season runs from early June to mid-October.
