This Weißensee classic route takes you to Falkenstein and the Mariengrotte there. Later, enjoy wide views over the lake-rich foothills of the Alps, towards Zugspitze and many other alpine peaks from the Zirmgrat path. The Zirmgrat path is part of the European long-distance trail E4, the Violet route of the Via Alpina, and the Maximilian route. Treat yourself to a hiking snack on the hut terrace of the Salober Alm. From Alatsee, a root path leads back to the starting point at Weißensee.

    Author’s recommendation

On the Zirmgrat, you can enjoy not only beautiful views but also richly blooming alpine roses in summer. Treat your hiking legs to a foot bath in Weißensee or in the new Kneipp footbath behind the kiosk at the end of the tour.

    Safety information

After rainy days, the root paths and trails are slippery and not recommended.

This route passes grazing land, so please note the following advice from the Bavarian Farmers' Association:
Hikers, cyclists, and visitors enjoy the alpine pasture and the views there with a hearty snack. Not only people live on the alps but especially grazing animals. Cows, calves, sheep, and horses enjoy their "summer retreat" there. To prevent undesirable encounters between you and the animals, here is a collection of behavioral rules from the Bavarian Farmers' Association.

    • An alpine pasture is not a petting zoo! Avoid direct contact with the animals.
    • Do not take selfies with grazing animals.
    • Keep your distance!
    • Avoid herds with calves. Cows protect their calves!
    • Walk slowly through the pasture.
    • Do not make sudden movements. Animals are easily startled.
    • Do not make noise.
    • Do not separate individual animals from the herd.
    • Keep dogs on a leash! Cows instinctively react nervously to dogs. In case of danger: let go of the dog’s leash!
    • Watch for warning signals from cows! For example, lowering the head, pawing, mooing.
    • Do not approach cows from the front. Cows have a pronounced lateral field of vision.
    • Do not turn your back on cows unobserved.

Did you know? ... the royal footsteps on Falkenstein Castle ...

King Ludwig II planned to build another castle on a mountain peak near Pfronten – his Falkenstein Castle. However, it was not to become an additional fairy-tale castle like the nearby Neuschwanstein. The king rather had a "robber baron's castle" in mind. The location was not chosen by chance. Here stood and still stands the ruin of a medieval castle. The history of this old building fascinated and inspired the Bavarian king from early on. "Falkenstein, wildly romantic, what much the old walls must tell of past glory!?" wrote the 22-year-old Ludwig II in 1867.

After many years of planning, during which three architects tried their hand successively, preparations for the construction site began after purchasing the mountain area. A road and water pipe were laid.

The project was never realized due to Ludwig II's sudden death in 1886. Only a memorial plaque on the walls of the medieval ruin still commemorates Ludwig II’s Falkenstein Castle today.

    Roadbook

From the Weißensee bathing area, head a few hundred meters counterclockwise on the lake circular route until you turn right towards "Roßmoos/Wiedmar." Follow the paved bike and footpath along the B 310 to Roßmoos. Passing the hiking parking lot at Schützenheim, walk through the hamlet Roßmoos until you turn left at the fork and then follow the signposts for "Falkenstein." The route leads over a field path through grazing land (beware of alpine cattle!), where shortly after, you turn left onto a forest road. The forest road later crosses the road to Falkenstein castle ruins. Walk about 200 meters on the road and then turn left back onto a hiking trail. After a short time on the hiking path, the road crosses the trail again. Follow the road to the Burghotel Falkenstein and the stairs to the Falkenstein castle ruins. After visiting the ruins, keep right and descend to the Mariengrotte. Then follow the hiking trail signs "Zirmgrat" and "Salober Alm" until you reach the road again. Follow the road about 700 meters downhill until you turn right onto the hiking trail "Zirmgrat/Salober Alm." Walk along the Zirmgrat until you reach the next fork at the old border stone. There, keep right and follow the signs to "Salober Alm." The path leads you over game trails through alpine meadows to Salober Alm. From there, hike downhill on the forest road to Alatsee. Upon reaching the Alatsee circular path, keep left and at the parking lot, turn left onto the road following the signposts for "Weißensee." Follow the paved road to the end of the marked parking spaces, then turn left at the barrier onto the hiking trail heading to the "Weißensee circular route." Follow the root path until you reach the Weißensee circular route and follow it clockwise back to the starting point at the Weißensee bathing area.

A worthwhile detour with a magnificent view of Weißensee can be reached when coming down from the Zirmgrat and arriving at a central fork. Here, do not go right to Salober Alm but slightly left along the fence into the forested area. After about 10 minutes, you will reach the Weißensee panoramic view and later rejoin the hiking trail leading to Salober Alm.

Places to eat and drink are offered by the Burghotel Falkenstein, the Salober Alm, and the kiosk at the Weißensee bathing area.
