Safety information
This route passes through cattle pastures, so please observe the following advice from the Bavarian Farmers' Association:
Hikers, cyclists, and visitors like to come to the alpine pasture and enjoy the view during a hearty snack. The pastures are home not only to people but especially to grazing animals. Cows, calves, sheep, and horses enjoy their "summer vacation" there. To avoid unwanted encounters between you and the animals, here is a collection of behavioral rules from the Bavarian Farmers' Association.
- An alp/pasture is not a petting zoo! Avoid direct contact with the animals.
- Do not take selfies with grazing animals.
- Keep your distance!
- Make a wide berth around herds with calves. Cows protect their calves!
- Walk slowly through the pasture.
- Do not make sudden movements. Animals are easily startled.
- Do not make any noise.
- Do not separate individual animals from the herd.
- Leash dogs! Cows react instinctively nervously to dogs. In case of danger: let dogs off the leash!
- Watch for warning signals from the cows! For example, lowering the head, pawing, bellowing.
- Do not approach cows from the front. Cows have a pronounced lateral field of vision.
- Do not turn your back on cows without watching them.

Did you know? ... the royal traces on Falkenstein Castle ...
King Ludwig II planned to build another castle on a mountain peak near Pfronten – his Falkenstein Castle. However, it was not to be an additional fairytale castle like the nearby Neuschwanstein. The king instead had a "robber baron's castle" in mind. The location was not chosen by chance. Here stood and still stands today the ruin of a medieval castle. The history of this old building fascinated and inspired the Bavarian king early on. “Falkenstein, wildly romantic, how much the old walls must tell of past glory!?” wrote the 22-year-old Ludwig II in 1867.
After many years of planning, during which three architects tried their hand one after another, preparations for the construction site began after purchasing the mountain area. A road and water supply were installed.
Due to Ludwig II's sudden death in 1886, the project was never realized. Only a memorial plaque on the walls of the medieval ruin still commemorates Ludwig II's Falkenstein Castle today.

Roadbook
You start from the parking lot at the Schützenheim in Roßmoos and go up into the small village, then turn left. Passing the last house in Roßmoos, follow the sign "Falkenstein" and go through a pasture gate onto the alpine meadows (caution young cattle). At the upcoming fork in the road, keep to the right; from there the gravel path leads to the road, where you turn left and reach Benken. At the end of Benken, the Finstertalweg branches off to the right and takes you along a forest road to Pfronten-Meilingen. Arriving at the road (König-Ludwig-Weg), follow the signs "Burgruine Falkenstein/Salobergrat" first left and then immediately right about 20 m later onto the castle path. After another approx. 20 m, the path branches left. You first follow a wide field path that then leads into a forest path with a moderate incline. After a few hundred meters, the forest path climbs very steeply; beware of slipping hazard. After the first steep section, cross a wide path with coarse gravel. The signs are easy to overlook here, so please do not follow the gravel path but take the small forest path on the opposite side. The sign "Burgruine Falkenstein/Pfronten-Steinach" leads you past the Schlossanger Alp, then you descend some altitude, which you shortly afterwards climb again on the path to the Mariengrotte. Past the Mariengrotte, the path goes steeply left up to the Falkenstein castle ruin. After descending from the ruin, follow the road past the Burghotel Falkenstein. Follow the road for about 500 meters before turning right onto a forest path towards "Pfronten-Meilingen". This is followed by a short section on the asphalt road before you turn right towards Roßmoos/Benken. Follow the forest path steadily downhill until you reach the middle of a cattle pasture where you turn right towards Roßmoos. The path takes you directly back to your starting point at the Schützenheim in Roßmoos.
Food and drink options can be found at the Schlossanger Alp or at the Burghotel Falkenstein.
