Extensive route from Hopfensee through meadows and forest to Alpe Beichelstein with moderate ascents.
After a few meters on the Hopfensee lakeside promenade, you go over the Vilser parking lot into the Hopfen forest. Later you hike a bit through sunny meadows before the route noticeably climbs to the hamlet Ober-Langegg and further to Alpe Beichenstein. During the short alpine summer, young cattle graze around the Beichelstein and Senkele alpine pastures. Trail signs provide information among other things about the formation of the rare beech forest typical for the region. The last hiking kilometers from the eastern end of the Senkele ridge first run over a sunny section and then over bright forest paths to Koppenkreuz and further to the Hopfen castle ruins – once the first castle in the region, today a panoramic vantage point.

If the route with its 17 km is too long for you, you can easily shorten it by moving the start and end point to the Hopferwald hiking parking lot.

Safety information
On this route you will pass pastures, so please observe the following instructions from the Bavarian Farmers' Association:
Hikers, cyclists, and visitors like to come to the alpine pastures and enjoy the view there with a hearty snack. Not only people live on the alpine pastures, but also grazing animals. Cows, calves, sheep, and horses enjoy their "summer retreat" there. To avoid unwanted encounters between you and the animals, here is a collection of behavioral rules from the Bavarian Farmers' Association.
- An alpine pasture is not a petting zoo! Avoid direct contact with the animals.
- Do not take selfies with grazing animals.
- Keep your distance!
- Make a detour around herds with calves. Cows protect their calves!
- Walk slowly through the pasture.
- Do not make sudden movements. Animals are easily startled.
- Do not make noise.
- Do not separate individual animals from the herd.
- Keep dogs on a leash! Cows instinctively react nervously to dogs. In case of danger: let dogs off the leash!
- Watch for warning signals from cows! For example, lowering the head, pawing, bellowing.
- Do not approach cows from the front. Cows have a pronounced lateral field of vision.
- Do not turn your back to cows unobserved.

Roadbook
Starting from the village shop Hopfen, you hike to the right along the lakeside path until you cross the main road at the public bathing area "Seepark Hopfen" and walk right past the parking lot towards "Hopferwald". The forest road leads you through wooded area until you reach a fork by a stream. Keep left towards "Rohrweiher/Alpe Beichelstein". (Do not be confused, Rohrweiher is the name of the hamlet; you do not pass a pond (body of water).) From Rohrweiher, you walk on the paved road to the next fork. There, keep right and follow the signs "Alpe Beichelstein". The road leads you past the Hopferwald hiking parking lot, over Stellenbach to the next fork. Turn left and after a few hundred meters immediately turn right again towards "Oberlangegg/Alpe Beichelstein". In the hamlet Oberlangegg, turn right after the first house and follow the red directional signposts. The path eventually brings you over pasture directly to Alpe Beichelstein. From there, follow the sign "Naturpfad Senkele", which first continues over pastures and then goes downhill through beech forest. At the end of the nature trail, you meet a forest road, which you follow to the right towards "Hopferwald parking lot" until you reach the parking lot. At the parking lot, turn left towards "Perstfriedhof Rieden" and follow the path to Koppenkreuz, where you turn right on the forest road towards "Hopfen castle ruins". There are two options to reach the castle ruins; it is best to follow the yellow pictogram of terrain course 4 until you reach the ruins. After circling the old castle complex, follow the path downhill towards "Hopfen town center" and thus reach the starting point of your route.
Refreshment options are only available at Alpe Beichelstein (please note that the alpine pasture only opens at 11:00 am) or at the end of the route in Hopfen am See. Therefore, be sure to pack enough provisions for this long route.
