Oberallgäu - outdoor paradise in the south of Bavaria
The Oberallgäu is the southernmost vacation region in Germany and at the same time one of the most varied natural landscapes in the entire Alpine region. Between the gentle foothills of the Alps and the rugged peaks of the Allgäu Alps, a landscape unfolds that delights hikers, mountaineers, cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts alike. Characteristic are the wide alpine meadows, mighty rock formations and idyllic mountain lakes such as the Schrecksee, the Gaisalpseen or the Große Alpsee near Immenstadt.
Summer in the mountains
In the summer months, active vacationers are drawn to the high-altitude trails and valleys. Hikers will find leisurely routes to mountain huts as well as challenging summit tours and alpine classics such as the Heilbronner Weg or the Hindelanger via ferrata. Those who prefer to travel on two wheels can enjoy the flatter sections of the Illertal or set off on the Allgäu cycle circuit, which is one of the longest and most varied cycle paths in Germany. Mountain bikers will get their money's worth on the varied trails around Oberstdorf, Balderschwang or Bad Hindelang. And if the temperatures rise, mountain lakes and rivers invite you to swim, paddle or simply linger on the banks.
The Oberallgäu: vacation region at the southernmost point of Germany
The gateway to the Allgäu High Alps lies a little further south near Immenstadt. The Illertal begins between the Nagelfluhkette in the west and the Grünten in the east, which extends with its small side valleys via Sonthofen and Oberstdorf to the southernmost point of Germany at Haldenwanger Eck.
Oberallgäu lake landscape
But they are not the only ones to offer the finest bathing fun in the summer season. Combined with a long hike, a visit to the Schrecksee is an absolute classic for ambitious hikers. The Untere Gaisalpsee, the Obere Gaisalpsee and the Freibergsee are also worth a visit. .
Nature experiences
Impressive views are offered by striking peaks such as the Hochgrat, the highest mountain in the Nagelfluhkette, or the Nebelhorn near Oberstdorf, which is a popular destination for mountain lovers with its cable car and surrounding high-altitude trails.
Castles and palaces
Among the best-known and best-preserved witnesses to history are the castle ruins of Alttrauchburg, Sulzberg and Laubenbergerstein - fascinating excursion destinations that offer exciting insights into medieval life and are often wonderful hiking destinations. Perched picturesquely high above the valleys in the Allgäu foothills of the Alps, they tell stories of knights and counts.
In contrast to the neighboring Ostallgäu, where magnificent buildings such as Neuschwanstein Oberallgäu is characterized by smaller but very characteristic castles, such as the classicist town castle of Immenstadt or the former hunting lodge of Hindelang. Today, the castle buildings are mostly used by municipalities as town halls or museums - or as event locations.
