Sonthofer customs
As a result of centuries of seclusion, traditional customs have been preserved in the Oberallgäu. Many of these go back to the Middle Ages: the Eggaspiel is a carnival custom in Sonthofen with pagan origins.
The bonfire takes place on the first Sunday after Shrove Tuesday. Large piles of wood are lit on many hills and mountains. A tradition of the Celts, who wanted to drive away the winter in this way.
