The small high mountain lake is located at about 1800 m altitude, framed by high mountains like the "Älpelekopf", the "Knappenkopf", the "Kastenkopf" and the "Lahnerkopf". To the northwest, the cauldron is open and the terrain drops off.
The "Schrecksee" is easy to reach from Hinterstein via the hut "Taufersalpe", from the well known trail "Jubiläumsweg" that runs between the huts "Willersalpe" and "Prinz-Luitpold-Haus" or from the "Landsberger Hütte".
