Schwarzwaldverein e.V. Verified partner
It was founded on June 8, 1864 in Freiburg im Breisgau as Germany's first hiking association and is now the second largest German hiking association with around 50,000 members.
The original aim was to promote tourism, which was achieved in the following years by opening up the Black Forest with the help of travel literature, maps, benches, shelters, viewpoints and the creation of hiking trails.
From the very beginning, the preservation and restoration of architectural monuments and ruins was a statutory objective, which is now represented by the Culture & Heritage department. In 1909, the preservation of special natural features became a statutory objective, marking the birth of today's Nature Conservation department. Community hikes were undertaken quite early on, but were only formulated as a statutory objective in the 1930s.
Today, the following tasks are enshrined in the main association's statutes:
- Promotion of hiking, cycling and nature sports
- Protection of nature and landscape
- Creation, marking and maintenance of hiking trails
- Promotion of culture & homeland
- Family work
- Youth work
