Hohentengen vineyard circular route
The scenic hike to the vineyards of the Engelhof winery, with the return via Rötteln Castle and the Rhine riverside path, is a delight for every hiker.
The vineyard circular route leads from the Rathaus in the town center of the municipality of Hohentengen on comfortable paths to the vineyards of the southernmost winery in Germany, the Engelhof. The geometry of the vineyard with a wonderful view of the Rhine and the medieval Swiss town of Kaiserstuhl, delights both the hiker and the wine lover alike. The path also leads to a private fallow deer enclosure as well as the picturesque Rötteln Castle located on the Rhine shore. You can enjoy the wines of Engelhof at a stop in the Hohentengen gastronomy. A simple refreshment is also possible during the swimming season at the outdoor pool kiosk. The relatively short path, along with the fallow deer enclosure and the refreshment options, also makes the vineyard circular route attractive for families with children.
From the signpost location Weilergraben, it is only a short distance of about 5 minutes to the Weisswasserstelz ruin and the refreshment option at the Gasthaus Wasserstelz.
For the autumn hike applies: The path to the hiker - the grapes to the winemaker!

Roadbook
The route starts at the signpost location Rathaus (south of the steps to Rathausplatz) heading towards Kehlen. Always following the yellow diamond over Kirchstraße and Hansengelstraße. As soon as the paved part of the street ends, after about 10 meters at the fork, turn right onto a beautiful meadow path to the signpost location Kehlen. From there, turn right again to the second Kehlen location. Here, an information board provides interesting details about the fallow deer and the enclosure. The path now leads left between the deer enclosure towards Weilergraben. When the vines are reached, the path marked with the diamond arrow turns left. Here, on the first information board (more will follow), the hiker learns useful details about wine and the winery. Then it goes through the vineyard slope of the "Ölberg" with a beautiful view of the Engelhof winery and the Rhine Valley. After the gate, follow a not always clearly visible meadow path to the Weilergraben location. The path leads right there until the yellow diamond leads us about 50 meters to the right again, gently uphill through the forest to the gate of the vineyard. Then through vines to a fenced pond. The path sharply turns left outside the vineyard over a small stairway, marked with yellow diamond arrows, to the scenic path high above the vines. After a few minutes, you reach a sky lounger with views of the winery and the Rhine. Soon a small holiday home is reached with a beautiful view, followed shortly by another sky lounger with a 5-star view of the Rhine Valley and the medieval town of Kaiserstuhl. Then continue to the two Kehlen locations that show the path to Rötteln Castle and the Rhine riverside path, which leads to the swimming pool. After a short ascent on the paved road, the starting point at the Rathaus is reached within a few minutes.
