Im Jahr 2006 wurde die Rheininsel als Naturschutzgebiet der Petite Camargue Alsacienne ausgewiesen und das französische Energieversorgungsunternehmen EDF initiierte auf 120 Hektar ein ökologisches Renaturierungsprojekt.

Zwischen 2013 und 2015 wurden 380.000 m³ Erde bewegt und 150.000 Bäume gepflanzt... Die Wiederbelebung des alten Rheinarms „Petit Rhin“ schuf neue Lebensräume und begünstigte unter anderem die Rückkehr des Bibers. Nach und nach bevölkern die Biber wieder die hiesigen Gewässer.
In der Dämmerung verlassen sie ihren Bau und machen sich auf die Suche nach pflanzlicher Nahrung. Dabei hinterlassen sie deutliche Spuren.
