The Birse, an ideal biotope for the beavers!
In 2004, the authorities decided to renature the river and to recreate a wilder river bed. That was good news for the beavers: this mammal thrives along natural waterways and undeveloped areas. In 2010, the first specimens were spotted along the Birse and the population has grown ever since. According to the Beaver Census Bureau of the Basel-Land Canton authorities, there are already fourteen areas colonized by the beaver on the Birse. The trail along the Birse is 12 km long and well worth a visit. The exhibit panels, marked with the dragonfly sign, give a wealth of information on biodiversity along the river and explain everything one needs to know about our beaver friends.
