In the footsteps of the “Gerbersauer Stories” – Hermann Hesse, Calw and surroundings
Who could better convey the charm of this hike than H.Hesse himself: “When as a poet I speak of the forest or the river, the meadow valley, the chestnut shade or the scent of fir, it is the forest around Calw I mean, it is the Calw Nagold, it is the fir forests and chestnuts of Calw, and also market square, bridge and chapel, Bishop Street and Leather Lane, Brühl and Hirsau meadow path are recognizable everywhere in my books, even in those which do not explicitly present themselves as Swabian, because all these images and a hundred others once acted as primal images to help the boy, and not some concept of ‘fatherland’, but rather these images I have remained faithful and grateful to throughout my life; they helped shape me and my worldview, and they still shine more intensely and beautifully today than ever in my youth.”
From "Gerbersauer Stories", H.Hesse

In Badgasse is the Tannery Museum, only visitable with a guided tour; opening hours: Sun. 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., information: phone 07051-3751. Charming path along the babbling Rötelbach stream, and probably the most beautiful section is the Schweinbach valley, where numerous lovingly laid stones lead across the brook and the deeply incised river gives the feeling of a "gorge", with moss-covered stone blocks and logs on both sides. A bench after the first section invites you to take a break. And those who still have enough strength should take a stroll in Hirsau. The massive minster – ground area larger than Cologne Cathedral – was built in just nine years.
