From the Enz Valley to the Büchenbronner Höhe
The circular hike from Neuenbürg Station up to the Büchenbronner Viewing Tower is very varied and charming.
An interesting hike through the water catchment areas in the Grösseltal follows the wonderful view, as well as a detour to Angelstein.
Author’s recommendation
Worth seeing in Neuenbürg Castle is the Northern Black Forest Museum, a museum of a special kind, focusing on the mechanical staging of Hauff's fairy tale "The Cold Heart." The exhibitions on castle and regional history are also interesting.

Roadbook
The hike begins at the signpost location at the Neuenbürg Main Train Station. We cross the Enz on the footpath of the railway bridge and turn right after about 50 m at the signpost "Railway Bridge." Here we are on the Westweg (marking: red diamond) heading towards Pforzheim. We descend steps down to the Schleifmühlenweg towards "Lower Sauberg." After about 200 m, we then hike along the Pionierweg next to the Enz, past the Eberhard-Essich-Hut of the Neuenbürg Black Forest Association to the Grösselbach, which we cross by a stone ford.
Then we cross the L 338, continue straight ahead to the location "Lower Sauberg." Here we leave the Westweg and turn right with the yellow diamond to the intersection "Water Pipeline Path" towards "Büchenbronner Höhe." We leave the Water Pipeline Path at the signpost "Grösseltalberg" and continue uphill on the Gottschalkweg to the Eichberghut. Here we have to cross the Karl-Schneider-Weg and then first turn left and after about 300 m turn right. A steep ascent follows to the signpost "Winterhalde." There we turn right and about 80 m after the Engelsbrand Hut, first left and then immediately right again. After about 400 m, we reach the highest point of our hike, the Büchenbronner Höhe (608 m) with its viewing tower.
We will quickly forget the stair climbing on the tower when we enjoy the wonderful view over Pforzheim and the surrounding area.
Two memorial stones stand here on the height, a war memorial and the memorial stone "100 years Mittelweg."
Now on the Mittelweg of the Black Forest Association (marking: red diamond with a vertical white bar), we continue hiking through and to Engelsbrand towards Langenbrand to the location "Brennermiß." At the "Glass Fountain," we leave the Mittelweg and hike downhill on the Glass Fountain Path, along the upper Grösselbach and past the "Mourning Ash." Where the path turns left towards the location "Klingenäcker," we shortcut straight ahead to the source catchments of Glass Fountain. We now follow the yellow diamond, continuing downhill on the Lower Sackbergweg past the "Coal Fountain" (the Grösseltal is a water catchment area: even today some springs are part of Pforzheim's water supply) to the signpost "At the Grösseltal House." Now we hike on the Three-Valley Path (marking: 3 green fir trees and 3 blue waves). After about 30 m, we must take a steep ascent slightly to the left on a narrow path towards Angelstein, cross two forest roads, and at "Buchwald" turn left onto the bridle path, go uphill to the signpost "Under Angelstein," turn right on a narrow path that leads us to Angelstein. The Angelstein is a group of partly piled sandstone rock blocks with overhangs and passages. According to a memorial plaque, Gottfried Burkhardt was born here in 1796 during a French invasion.
The narrow path leads us further up to the Sägkopf (556 m); we continue to follow the Three-Valley Path marking past the Enzblick Hut and then descend again via the "Landfill." On the right, the "Fresh Luck Path" leads to the location "Happey" and further to the "Windhof." Here we join the Westweg again.
Before us lies the Schlossberg; both markings guide us over the Rear Schloss-Steige to Neuenbürg Castle. On the Front "Schloss-Steige" we hike downhill to St. George's Church; from here, there is a wonderful view of Neuenbürg. Afterwards, we continue descending to the Market Square.
The starting point of our hike (Main Train Station) can be reached either by feeder bus (Bus 724 – Market Square stop; via South Station) – or we walk about 1 km on Bahnhofstraße to the Main Train Station.
