The 176 km long long-distance trail is the most popular cross-route of the Black Forest Association. It leads from Germany's southernmost large city to Konstanz on Lake Constance.

    1,190 m

The starting point is Freiburg im Breisgau, the lowest place of the entire route. From Schwabentor the trail leads up to Schlossberg above the sunny vineyards and further to the pilgrimage church St. Ottilien, downhill into the Zarten basin. In the Dreisam valley, it goes steeply up from Buchenbach to scenic rock ledges above the Höllental and on to Hinterzarten. In the High Black Forest with its characteristic Black Forest farms we hike along the Titisee, the largest natural lake in the Black Forest. Then we climb up to the lookout tower on the Hochfirst. At 1190 m above sea level it is the highest point of the cross-route. Gorge sections follow mountain stages. Along the Haslach we hike to the confluence with the Gutach, where both unite to form the "angry Aach." We hike through the botanically and geologically significant Wutach Gorge via Schattenmühle to Achdorf, where the Wutach is diverted towards the Rhine. Through its former "Blumberg Gate" we reach Blumberg and climb the scenic Buchberg. With a view of the Sauschwänzlebahn (railway) we hike to the village of Randen on the eponymous mountain. The Hoher Randen is already part of the Swabian Jura. At the Blue Stone we have crossed the geographical border to the Hegau. Its volcanic cones can be admired from afar on the scenic Old Post Road from Riedöschingen to the handsome small town of Engen. They lie directly on the way to Singen. Behind it is Friedinger Schlössle, the last preserved one of originally 400 castles in the Hegau. Impressive is the view from the former Homburg above Stahringen. Through the wooded Bodanrück between the Lower Lake and the Überlinger See the cross-route leads to numerous natural beauties.

Happy trails!
