Cross-route Freiburg - Lake Constance: Stahringen - Güttingen - Langenrain
The stage leads on the scenically appealing Bodanrück to the bioenergy village Möggingen and continues with views to Langenrain overlooking the Mindelsee between Lake Überlingen and Lake Zeller.
From the Radolfzell district Stahringen below the Homburg ruin, we continue the stage hike on the cross-route.
The first section to Güttingen is fully paved. As an alternative starting point, this district is also considered. Its surroundings are characterized by orchard meadows, typical again today for the Lake Constance landscape. To get to know old regional varieties, the Orchard Variety Garden was established in Möggingen with 46 newly planted fruit trees. Visitors can test 71 different varieties, mainly old types of apples, pears, and plums.
The small village Möggingen attracts nature lovers to the Bodanrück. Environment and nature conservation have a high priority here. The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology with the Radolfzell Bird Observatory is housed in the water castle. The former mill in the village center is home to the BUND Nature Conservation Center Möggingen with the main office of the Baden-Württemberg state association. Möggingen is also a pioneer in energy. 135 houses of the bioenergy village are supplied with heat from the heating plant, produced from locally generated biogas and wood chips.
Three lakes are in close proximity. While the view of Lake Überlingen is obstructed by the wooded Bodanrück, below lies the approximately two-kilometer-long and 570-meter-wide Mindelsee. It represents an important nature and landscape conservation area with its surrounding natural spaces. From the height, the Zeller See, part of the Lower Lake, can also be seen.
Picturesque meadows, colorful pastures, and species-rich forests accompany us on the high-level path to Langenrain.

Roadbook
Start from Stahringen:
In the town center of Stahringen, we continue the stage hike on the cross-route at the intersection of „Schloßhaldenstraße“ and Hauptstraße.
Those who arrived by the „Seehäsle“ Regional Train go from the signpost location „Stahringen/Station“ through the street „Am Böhlerberg“ to the left and reach the starting point after 50 meters.
Through Hauptstraße we pass the „Town Hall“, cross the railway line and then go right from the street on a bike/pedestrian path to the „Tiefbrunnen“. We follow the asphalted path to the busy B34 and must cross it „Beim Ziegelhof“ to the left. After the wooded „Durchenberg“ we reach the village entrance of Güttingen. Here we follow Sankt Ulrich-Straße to the „Village Square“ by the „Church“ St. Ulrich. It was built in 1795 on older remains, extended from 1884 to 1896, and remodeled again in the 20th century.
We turn right into Badener Straße to the signpost „Kirchhalde“.
Start from Güttingen:
From the bus stop „Güttingen Schule“, we continue along Badener Straße to the signpost „Kirchhalde“.
We leave Kirchhalde downhill on a right curve out of town and head towards Möggingen. Where the path at the next fork leads straight to the water castle, we go left above Möggingen through orchard meadows and cannot resist tasting the various apple varieties. Finally, we reach the information board of the Radolfzell Environmental Office, which explicitly encourages trying the varieties planted below in the Orchard Variety Garden.
At the „Tennis Court“, the cross-route turns south in front of the heating plant. Stairs lead down to the „Town Hall“. Opposite stands the Catholic parish church St. Gallus. It was built in 1749; the interior is neo-Romanesque, and the tower was added only in 1839. Opposite it stands the burial chapel of the Lords of Bodman.
We go left along Sankt-Gallus-Straße to the location „Church“. Opposite is the BUND Nature Conservation Center Möggingen in the former mill. Through Mühlbachstraße and the right branching Dürrenhofstraße, we leave the village and take the left path at the next fork. It eventually becomes a gravel path and then right into a meadow trail. Along the way, we repeatedly enjoy views of the two lakes: the Mindelsee and the Zeller See visible behind it. Between them rises the church tower of Markelfingen.
In the adjacent forest section, the cross-route turns right backward to „Dürrenhof“. Here, the Rosenstüble invites to a rest directly on the hiking trail.
The further path is paved until Hirtenhof. Then it goes together with the Lake Constance circular route up to „Hart“. In Hartwald, we walk along the „Halde“ and keep the direction until leaving the forest and reaching the road to Langenrain. From here (To Mindelsee) we go left into Langenrain, past the „Church“ to the „Castle“ at the intersection with Liggeringer Straße.
Straight ahead is the bus stop „Langenrain Village Square“, opposite the Bodanrück Guesthouse.
Those who still have enough time should walk 500 m west on Liggeringer Straße to visit the Sophienruhe (vine chapel). As a crowning conclusion of today’s stage on the cross-route, we enjoy from here the splendid view of Freudental Castle and the Lower Lake. On the opposite side of Lake Überlingen, you can see Überlingen Minster and Heiligenberg Castle in 19 km distance.
