Cross-route Freiburg - Lake Constance: Ebnet - Buchenbach
The Black Forest cross-route Freiburg – Lake Constance runs on this section along paved paths through the lovely Dreisam valley.
The cross-route that started in Freiburg continues at the entrance of Ebnet.
In the Zarten basin lies the town of Stegen with Schloss Stegen-Weiler of the former local lords. On the grounds today is the high school Kolleg St. Sebastian and the impressive castle chapel. South of Stegen, the Dreisam originates at the confluence of Wagensteigbach and Rotbach. Rotbach flows through the Höllental and is therefore also called Höllenbach. Along Wagensteigbach, the cross-route continues to Burg am Wald. The place name probably refers to the castle-like rampart of the late Celtic fortification Tarodunum. Already in the district of Buchenbach stands the Our Father Chapel. The publisher Theophil Herder-Dorneich built it in 1968 in the Iben valley. South of this, the Wanglerhof Mill was restored to working order. The destination of the first stage of this long-distance trail is Buchenbach. Its landmark is the originally baroque Catholic parish church St. Blasius. It was built in 1811 as a classical church and rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style in 1901.

Roadbook
If you arrive by bus, walk 800 m from the last stop in Ebnet along Steinhaldestraße to the town exit, where the first signpost "Entrance Welchental (340 m)" is already located.
From here, the cross-route runs along gravel paths at the edge of the forest to the location "Attental/Kreuzmatte" in a clearing. Then it follows the street "Fohrenbühl", past the first houses of Wittental and the Forest Zoological Institute of the University of Freiburg to "Wittental/Klorerberg".
In "Wittental", turn right into Wittentalstraße, which we leave again at "Baldenwegerhof" and at the next fork turn right again. Straight ahead, we reach the "Hiking Parking Lot Stegen" at the edge of the forest and the site of the former "Castle Mill". To the right, we head towards Kolleg St. Sebastian in Stegen. On the grounds is the impressive Schloss Stegen-Weiler.
The hiking trail turns left before the Kolleg to lead "At the Kolleg" and then right onto Kirchzartener Straße to the "Village Square". We continue straight through Unterbirken to the crossroads "Aumatten". South of this lies the source of the Dreisam. We hike left along the upper course of its source stream Wagensteigbach "at Hohrain" towards Burg am Wald and through "Mühlenstraße" to "Laubishof", with the impressive courtyard chapel. Shortly afterwards, we cross the Wagensteigbach to the right and turn left again.
At "Beim Pfisterhof", we can follow the cross-route directly to Buchenbach via the "Sports Field". Alternatively, the signpost already shows the Our Father Chapel. Before the "Valley Bridge", the path marked with the yellow rhombus leads over the Wanglerhof Mill back to the cross-route.
At "Vogtweg", both routes meet again.
Opposite the inn Zum Schlüssel, we find an information board about the Celtic settlement Tarodunum, which stretched between Wagensteigbach and Höllenbach.
We cross the Wagensteigbach again towards "Wiesneck" and follow Wiesneckstraße to the "Colony". From here, a detour to the ruins of Burg Wiesneck is marked (0.6 km).
At "Heissbrunnen", we continue straight ahead past the primary school, behind which we turn right to cross the Wagensteigbach for the last time. We follow its course to where the Pfaffendobelbach joins from the right, where we already see the Church of St. Blasius of Buchenbach.
We have reached the destination of the first stage of the Freiburg – Lake Constance cross-route. Directly opposite the Parish Church of St. Blasius is the Adler inn, which spoils hikers gastronomically and also offers accommodation.
Anyone who wants to break the route in Buchenbach can take the bus from the town hall bus stop to Himmelreich station on weekdays. From there it is an additional 1.8 km on foot along the main road (signpost locations Town Hall, Moosbachstraße, Himmelreich Station).
