The hike on the Freiburg – Lake Constance cross path between Blumberg and the Riedöschingen district offers magnificent views of the Randen and the heritage railway "Sauschwänzlebahn".

From Blumberg, the cross path initially leads to the scenic home mountain Buchberg. Together with Eichberg, it forms the so-called Blumberg gate. About 20,000 years ago, the Urdonau flowed through it as the Feldberg Danube until the Wutach was abruptly diverted southwards to the High Rhine.

In the south of Blumberg, in 1890, the Wutachtalbahn was opened as a strategic railway between the Randen and the Klettgau. It was intended to serve in a possible further war against France, defeated in 1870/1871, and to bypass neutral Switzerland. Only through a repeatedly winding route was it possible for the builders to overcome the height difference of 231 m over a distance of only 9.3 km. The result was the Sauschwänzlebahn with a route length of 25 km.

The Freiburg-Lake Constance cross path finally takes us over the Randen to the Blue Stone, a rock formation of basalt columns up to 10 m high.

Our route hike begins on the main street of Blumberg at the Gänseliesel fountain. Using the marking "white-red lozenge on a yellow background," we orient ourselves from the signpost "Gänseliesel" always towards Engen. We initially climb up Friedhofstraße to the "Protestant Church" and turn right before the cemetery, then left into Pommernweg, crossing it and immediately turning right again. We continue to follow the trail marking on the Rubreuteweg, which we leave after 100 m by turning left. On the ascent to Buchberg, magnificent views open up over the villages of the previous stage: in front of us lie Achdorf, Aselfingen, and Überachen. We climb the last meters in switchbacks to Buchbergstutz (880 m). From up here, a splendid panoramic view opens towards the Black Forest and on clear days as far as the Alps. The Buchberghütte invites you to rest with benches and a barbecue area. From the hut, we follow the wide path along the slope of Buchberg and at the bend continue straight ahead down the narrow path to Ottilienhöhe (800 m) and further to the location Wannen (735 m). On the way, the winding course and numerous viaducts of the Wutachtalbahn impress. On the Wannen, we are directly above the Buchbergtunnel of the railway. Turning right, we follow the railway educational trail and simultaneously cross the watershed between the Rhine and the Danube with the country road. Here, the Wutachtalbahn emerges again from the Buchbergtunnel, and shortly thereafter, at the forest edge, we reach one of Germany's most popular viewpoints for railway enthusiasts, the so-called "Vierbahnenblick". In front of us lies the 252 m long and 24 m high Biesenbach viaduct. Behind it, the Epfenhofen station can be seen. Twice more the railway line is visible at Fützen. Then we enter the forest, where the railway educational trail branches off at the "Steinbruch Heilinbuck". We remain on the cross path, which now comes within sight and hearing distance of the B27. Before the town of Randen, the forest opens again to a view to the south. Uphill to the left, we follow the "Jurastraße", passing a farm, then turn left and right again to the "village center". Here we cross the B27 to the inn "Hoher Randen". Initially, it continues on the asphalted "Blauer-Stein" street until it merges after 200 m to the right into a forest path that leads over the location "Am Blauen Stein" to the natural monument "Blauer Stein". Afterwards, we turn left and follow the forest edge to the right. On the descent to Riedöschingen, broad views of the surrounding landscape open up once again. In the distance, to the north, you can see the Länge transmission tower. To the left of it is Fürstenberg. Over open terrain, we come to a driveway, follow it briefly to the right, then leave it to the left again. Always straight ahead, we thus descend to Riedöschingen. In the village center, the cross path branches off by the "St. Martins fountain" southeast to the Old Post Road. To leave the long-distance hiking trail here, we turn left towards "Riedöschingen station". On the way lies the kindergarten bus stop. That the people of Riedöschingen are willing to compromise is even documented in the name of their local stream, which we shortly cross: the Kompromissbach was established as a border in 1535 after years of boundary disputes between the houses of Fürstenberg and Nellenburg. We follow the road out of the village and reach, after the "Ziegelhalde" signpost, the Riedöschingen stop of the 3er-Ringzug.
