The stage between the Blumberg district of Riedöschingen and the small town of Engen runs largely on the Old Post Road and offers great views of the volcanic mountains of the Hegau.

North of Watterdingen the "Old Post Road" runs through the Hegau. Until the railway was opened, the regionally important postal route connected the Danube Valley with the Rhine.

The Hegau was also strategically important militarily. French and Austrian armies fought each other in the "Battle of Engen". At the so-called Napoleonseck, the French troops' headquarters was from May 1 to 3, 1800. Napoleon himself was probably never in the Hegau.

The landscape of the region is dominated by numerous volcanically shaped mountains, which the local poet Ludwig Finck also called "des Herrgotts Kegelspiel" (the Lord's skittle game). The entire panorama of the Hegau volcanic mountains unfolds to the hiker during this stage on the Freiburg - Lake Constance cross path.

    Author’s recommendation

At the end of the route, a visit to the restored old town of Engen, one of the most beautiful in Germany, is worthwhile.

    Roadbook

Our route hike begins in the center of Riedöschingen (720 m). Those who start the stage with the 3er-Ringzug from the Riedöschingen stop follow the road via the signpost location "Ziegelhalde" and the Kindergarten bus stop into the town center. Continuing along the cross path, we turn right at the "Martinsbrunnen" in front of the church into Otto-Efferenn-Straße to the intersection with "Ledergasse". Straight ahead, we leave the town and at a wayside cross leave the road. The paved path now leads briefly left and then right as a gravel path steeply uphill to the forest edge at the signpost "Brand" (806 m). We take one last look back at Riedöschingen. Then it goes through the forest and at its end continues to the left. With a wide view of Tengen and the Hegau volcanic mountains, we again enter a forest section to a rest area. Shortly afterwards, at the "Tengener Eck" stands the old Nellenburg Gerichtslinde (court lime tree). In 1960, a lightning strike split the lime tree, which still blooms. Straight ahead, an unpaved path leads to the fork "Hoher Rain" under a high-voltage line. At the forest edge, we turn left and follow this to the "Spitzhütte" on the Old Post Road. From the open shelter at the rest area, we enjoy the view of the Hegau mountains. The path continues along the forest edge and finally on a forest road into it. The now wide path leads back out of the forest to the hiking parking lot "Bei der Alten Postweg Hütte". Here the panorama of the Hegau opens up once again. The closed post road shelter is suitable as another rest area with tables and benches as well as a barbecue spot. The Post Road, now also called Römerstraße, leads almost level to the intersection "Haslerhof" and further to the Napoleonseck. At the forest edge, we go downhill into the "Boschental" and again through the forest to the "Scheienbohl". At the forest tip, the Black Forest Association erected the Wetzelstein in 1984 on the 50th anniversary of the cross path. Again under the high-voltage line, we descend the Hasenbühl between Aspenhof and Hauserhof, cross their connecting road, and continue straight ahead onto the wooded Ballenberg. At its end, we come across a wooden cross with a bench. The Franzosenkreuz (Frenchmen's Cross) and a memorial stone commemorate the fallen of the Battle of Engen. From Ballenberg, we enjoy the view of Engen before descending through the Franzosenwäldle toward the town. At the intersection with "Ludwig-Finckh-Straße", the cross path turns right. Those who want to leave the long-distance hiking trail toward the station go left here, then immediately right through Hewenstraße to the "Fuchsloch" and there under the railway tracks to the station.
