Cross-trail Freiburg - Lake Constance: Mühlhausen - Singen
The stage leads us to two striking volcanic mountains in the Hegau. From the summits of Hohenkrähen and the Singen’s local mountain Hohentwiel, we enjoy magnificent views of the "Lord's skittle game".
The starting point for the hike on the cross-trail is the Mägdeberger Hof with a view of the Mägdeberg (664 m) and its castle ruins.
Today we go to Hohenkrähen (644 m) and Hohentwiel (686 m) and have enough time to climb both Hegau mountains and visit their ruins. With over 400 former fortifications, the Hegau is the region with the most castles in Germany!
The Hohenkrähen Castle is the federal headquarters of the Scout Association "Grauer Reiter". We climb the steep cone mountain via a narrow, almost alpine path and are rewarded with a unique panoramic view.
The neighboring Hohentwiel was never captured thanks to its commander Konrad Widerholt. To prevent possible besiegers from using other castles in the Thirty Years' War as bases, he had them destroyed as a precaution. This also led to the burning down of the castle on Hohenkrähen. Still, the Hohentwiel fortress was slighted in the Second Coalition War in 1801 after it was handed over to the French without a fight.
The premium hiking trail Hohentwieler leads around the local mountain of the town of Singen and finally to the main entrance of the fortress. It can be combined with this tour.
