Auf dem Kanonenplatz stand die Vorburg des 1091 von den Zähringern errichteten Burghaldenschlosses. Am Fuß des Schlossberges gründeten sie die Stadt Freiburg. Heute ist der Platz ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel und Aussichtspunkt auf die Höhen des Schwarzwaldes, die Vogesen und den Kaiserstuhl. Nach Osten öffnet sich ein schöner Blick ins Tal der Dreisam.
