Freiburg - Lake Constance transversal path: Kappel - Schattenmühle
From Lenzkirch-Kappel we hike on the Freiburg – Lake Constance transversal path through the wildly romantic Haslach and Wutach gorge to the Schattenmühle. Along the way, we experience the journey through several hundred million years of geological history of the Black Forest.
Nature trails, breathtaking deep views and rushing wild streams make the geologically and botanically interesting hike a unique experience. It leads initially through the Haslach gorge to the scenic Höllach and Rechen rocks. At the confluence of the Haslach with the Gutach, both join to form the Wutach, the „raging Aach“. The Wutach Gorge shaped by it was designated as one of the oldest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg in 1939. The initiative came from Hermann Schurhammer. He was a member of the Black Forest Association and is since then considered the „father of the protected area“. Earlier, already in 1895, the enormous gradient of the wild river was used for electricity generation. The Stallegg hydroelectric power station, the oldest of its kind in Baden, supplied the town of Donaueschingen with electricity until 1979. Even older is the approx. 300-year-old Stallegg fir. Important for long-distance trade was already early the ford at Stalleg, where today stands the „Stallegg bridge“. Here ran part of the old long-distance trade route from the Neckar to the Upper Rhine. High above the river stands the „Robber's Castle“, the former Neu-Blumberg castle. At the end of the stage, the Gasthaus Schattenmühle awaits us for a well-deserved rest.

At the end of the stage, a short circular route through the romantic Lotenbach gorge with its waterfalls is worthwhile.

Roadbook
Our route hike begins in Lenzkirch/Kappel at the „church“ or the bus stop of the same name on Neustädter Straße. We follow the white-red diamond into the Haslach valley to the Schattenmühle.
At the bus stop we turn right onto Brändestraße and follow it downward at the sign „Kappel Brände“, then turn right onto Grünwalderstraße and immediately left again. On the way to the Antonius Chapel we pass five bronze sculptures of the „Stations Path to the Canticle of the Sun of Saint Francis“. Along the forest edge and through it, we reach the clearing „Bei der Rauhalde“, where we again follow the forest edge to the left towards the „Rauhalde“.
Passing the former Kappel-Grünwald station, we continue on the wide Haslachhaldenweg until the marking points right to the viewpoint Höllachfelsen high above the Haslach gorge. From this impressive rock, we descend on rocky serpentine paths into the Haslach gorge and then ascend again to another viewpoint above the Rechenfelsen.
At the „Haslach mouth“ we finally cross the Gutach on a steel bridge, which here flows together with the Haslach. We follow the now „raging Aach“ on its left side towards the „Wutach slope“. Shortly thereafter, we reach the „Rötenbach mouth“. Here, the Rötenbach flows into the Wutach from a picturesque side gorge. We also cross this via a bridge.
At „Above the Rötenbach mouth“ we already see the small reservoir of the Stallegg power plant.
Soon on the left stands the approx. 300-year-old Stallegg fir. According to an information board, it is 52 m high and has a circumference of 4.5 m.
At the „Stallegg bridge“ we stay on the left side of the Wutach and climb a path that takes us high above the river to the „Robber's Castle“ on a porphyry rock. After its destruction in the Peasants' War, it was used as a refuge by bad elements, as a sign on site explains. Only a few wall remains exist. However, the deep view down into the Wutach Gorge is worthwhile.
Afterwards, the transversal path leads away at a right angle from the Wutach Gorge—the former riverside hiking trail had to be relocated for safety reasons. The marked detour runs 70 meters above the Wutach to a small rest area and finally descends again to it via the Glöckler slope. At the location „Glöcklerhaldenweg“ we descend the few meters steeply to the „Schattenmühle“ and have reached the stage destination.
The Gasthaus Schattenmühle offers refreshment and overnight accommodation for hikers.
From the adjacent hiking parking lot there are bus connections to Löffingen station.
